Bed Among the Lentils - Geoffrey's side.
Geoffrey's the vicar. He is grey but confident. He sits in the chair facing Jesus' cross in a church. It is evening.
Susan's gone out again. Shes always questioning God ... I don't understand how someone who spends 90% of her time in the home of the church can question God. She tells me 'A barristers wife doesn't have to go to court so why must I go to church' I pretend that I didn't hear her.
[sighing - looking up]
I know Susan's having her problems at the moment but how could anyone understand her when she doesn't even understand herself. I know I'm the vicar and most believe I pray to God and all my problems are gone. I bloody wish. She asked again 'do you believe in God or is it because it's your job to?' 'Why must we discuss this?' I answered in demand. She left, i think she realized that were out of sherry. She must of popped round to he off-licence. Surprise surprise. I'm still confused to why they would still allow her to purchase there due to the bill shes roared up - which of course i have nothing to say or participate in... she got herself in this mess, she can get herself out.
[Looks at floor, puts his hands through his hair]
But I guess this is better then having nothing... Wake up, go to church, eat, go to sleep. The same routine every day. Nothing ever changes in this God forsaken house! But -its better then having nothing. Susan gets jealous when Mrs Shrubsole gives me attention, I like that it makes her jealous. It makes me remember that she is human and does know how to feel, but she just doesn't express it enough. It makes me feel so useless you know? Being married to someone who seems to have 0 interest in you. It does really make me question God -even if I'm contradicting myself, why don't i deserve someone who loves and cares about me?
[sighing as Susan walks in]
Go to black, fade out.
